faceshopping

SOPHIE’s “Faceshopping” seems to be basing mostly on metallic, raw sounds which give futuristic, mechatronic vibe. Work starts with calm SOPHIE’s voice just to be, in a moment, interrupted by synth-heavy beat. Subsequently melody change into dreamy, light tone with very distinctive sound of magic bells, followed by words: “So you must be one I see in my dreams…” which draws receiver’s attention in personal and direct way. Created by SOPHIE composition is fascinating both because of using contrary sounds ,which are balancing together very well, and fact that listening to only 4 minutes-long work can give us such a variety of feelings. “Faceshopping” is perfect example of distortion of simple, uniform tone using ,opposite to each other, sounds.

sensitivity to sound

I can close my eyes. I can close my mouth. But I cannot close my heart when it comes to sound, especially classical music. It’s fascinating that no matter how many times I have heard particular symphony, it will still make me so emotional like it’s my very first time. It’s not that it makes me sad. It makes me happy. It makes me peaceful. Classical music is so pure, so beautiful that it makes me wonder how is it even possible ,for something so unworldly, to exist in this cruel, harsh reality . “The Forty Part Motet” made me stop for a moment. If I could imagine passing the gates of heaven it would sound exactly like that. Each voice in this piece is unique. Each voice in this piece is different but even then ,in unison, they create perfect totality. Placement of 40 speakers in a circle put this work on completely new level, creating safe space open for emotions. It feels like sound is around you and finally is YOU. I think that if some particular work of art makes you stop and forget about everything else, it is more than enough. It was truly beautiful experience.

discrepancy

Everything in nature is coming to unison. Sound is flexible. Sound is pliable. Sound is compliant. “Solid Of Revolution” starts with study pulses beating together with one millisecond difference in tempo. Discrepancy in tempo is merely nothing by itself, however as work goes on, the distortion becomes more and more visible. Closer to the end pulses start to beat in the unison, just to finally become ONE AND THE SAME .

In this universe everything happens for a reason in the right time with relevant effort. Jessica Ekomane perfectly captured the reality of life’s changing process. The direction is one. Paths are many. Pulses start from different points going towards the same purpose. Repetitive pattern, rooted in different tempo, creates hectic, almost harsh sound which is even more dimmed by the small space it’s framed in. “Solid Of Revolution”offers multiple interpretations at once, giving us diverse acceptance.
